Kuşadası is a lively Aegean resort with a big cruise port, a bustling bazaar and a good choice of hotels. Its biggest draw is location: the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the greatest Roman sites in the Mediterranean, is a short drive away, and Pamukkale, Priene and Didyma are all reachable on day trips.

Flights from London to Izmir take about 3h45. Turkey is two hours ahead of the UK in summer and three in winter, plugs are the two round-pin type, and cars drive on the right. See our Turkey guide for more.

Where to stay

  • Town centre and the harbour – hotels near the bazaar, the marina and the restaurants, handy for evenings out.
  • Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi) – a sandy beach south of town with hotels, bars and restaurants, popular with UK visitors.
  • Long Beach (Uzunplaj) – a long stretch north of town with larger all-inclusive resorts and family hotels.
  • Davutlar and Güzelçamlı – quieter areas south of town, close to the Dilek Peninsula national park.
  • City alternative – Izmir is about 1h15 north for a city break with food and history.

Things to do

  1. Ephesus – walk the marble streets past the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. Go early or late to avoid heat and cruise crowds.
  2. House of the Virgin Mary – a small chapel on a wooded hillside above Ephesus, revered by Christians and Muslims.
  3. Şirince – a pretty hill village known for fruit wines and stone houses.
  4. Pigeon Island – a small island with a Byzantine fortress, linked to town by a causeway.
  5. Dilek Peninsula–Büyük Menderes Delta National Park – coves, pine forest and walking trails.
  6. Pamukkale – white travertine terraces and the ruins of Hierapolis, a long day trip of about 3 hours each way.
  7. Priene, Miletus and Didyma – three impressive ancient sites south of Kuşadası, often visited together.

Check the cruise ship schedule before visiting Ephesus; on days when several ships are in port, the site is much busier.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are best for sightseeing, with warm days and fewer crowds. July and August are hot, often in the mid-30s °C, and best for the beach. The season usually runs from April to October, and some resorts close in winter.

Getting there

Fly to Izmir (ADB), which has direct flights from several UK airports, mainly in summer, as well as connections via Istanbul. The transfer to Kuşadası takes about 1h15. Bodrum (BJV) is about 2h30 away by road.

British passport holders don't currently need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180 days, and passports should be valid for at least 150 days from arrival. Rules change, so check GOV.UK foreign travel advice before booking.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses run regularly between Kuşadası, the beaches and Selçuk (for Ephesus). Taxis are easy to find. A hire car or an organised tour is best for Pamukkale and the southern ancient sites.
