Tonga is a kingdom of around 170 islands, fewer than 40 of them inhabited, scattered across the South Pacific between Fiji and Samoa. It was never colonised, still has a reigning king, and keeps a strong sense of tradition, from church on Sunday to woven ta'ovala mats worn around the waist. Tourism is small-scale and personal, and between July and October the main draw is the humpback whales that come here to breed and give birth.

The islands are about as far from the UK as it gets, so Tonga usually forms part of a bigger trip to New Zealand or Australia. Cars drive on the left, plugs are the Australian type I, and Tonga is 12 hours ahead of the UK in summer and 13 hours ahead in winter. This is one of our Oceania guides covering where to go, when to visit, getting there and what it costs in 2026.

Entry requirements

British passport holders can usually get a visitor visa on arrival, normally valid for about a month and extendable, provided your passport is valid for at least six months, you hold an onward ticket and have proof of accommodation and funds. Rules change, so check GOV.UK foreign travel advice before booking.

Where to go in Tonga

Tongatapu

The main island is home to the capital, Nuku'alofa, the Royal Palace, the Talamahu market and most of the population. Around the island you can see the Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon, a giant stone gateway, the Mapu'a 'a Vaca blowholes and the ancient royal tombs at Lapaha. Small islands such as Pangaimotu and Fafa are short boat rides offshore. The 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption and tsunami damaged parts of the coast, and some places are still recovering.

Vava'u

A cluster of steep, forested islands around one of the Pacific's best natural harbours. Vava'u is Tonga's yachting and whale-watching centre, with licensed operators running whale swims, plus sea kayaking, snorkelling at Swallows' Cave and Mariner's Cave, and sailing between quiet anchorages. Neiafu is the small main town.

Ha'apai

Low, flat coral islands with long, empty beaches and very few visitors. Lifuka is the hub, and a handful of simple resorts and guesthouses offer snorkelling, cycling and some whale trips in season. It is the place to switch off entirely.

'Eua

A short flight or ferry from Tongatapu, 'Eua is older and higher than the other islands, with cliffs, caves, rainforest walks in 'Eua National Park and whales passing close to shore in season.

Best time to visit Tonga

SeasonWhat to expect
Dry season (May-October)Cooler, drier and less humid; whale season runs roughly July to October
Wet season (November-April)Hot, humid and wetter, with quieter islands; tropical cyclone season, most likely January-March

Whale swims are limited by licence and small group sizes, so book the boat trip as early as your flights, especially for August and September.

Getting to Tonga from the UK

There are no direct flights. Most travellers fly to Auckland and connect with Air New Zealand to Tongatapu (about three hours), or fly via Sydney or Brisbane, or via Nadi with Fiji Airways. Allow around 28-32 hours in total from London. Domestic flights from Tongatapu to Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua are operated by the local airline. Tonga pairs easily with Fiji, Samoa or New Zealand.

Getting around

On Tongatapu, taxis, hire cars and bikes are all easy, and buses run informally from Nuku'alofa. Driving needs a local licence, issued at the police station. Inter-island travel is by small plane or by ferry; ferries are cheap but slow, and schedules change with the weather. Few flights or ferries run on Sundays.

Money and costs

Tonga uses the pa'anga. Guesthouses and simple beach resorts cost roughly TOP 150-350 a night, and a mid-range trip is around TOP 350-550 (about £110-175) per person per day. Whale swimming is the big extra, usually a few hundred pa'anga per person per day trip. ATMs are found in Nuku'alofa and Neiafu; take cash for the outer islands. Tipping is not customary.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really swim with whales in Tonga?

Yes. Licensed operators take small groups into the water with humpback whales, mainly in Vava'u and Ha'apai, from about July to October. Strict rules limit how close you can get and how many people swim at once.

What is open on a Sunday in Tonga?

Very little. Sunday is protected by the constitution as a day of rest, so most shops, restaurants and tours close. Resorts still serve guests, and visiting a church service to hear the singing is a highlight.

How long should I spend in Tonga?

A week covers Tongatapu and one outer island group. In whale season, give Vava'u at least four or five nights in case weather cancels a trip.

Is Tonga expensive?

Accommodation is good value, but flights to get there and whale swims add up. It is generally cheaper than French Polynesia and similar to Samoa.
