Deception Island is the caldera of an active volcano in the South Shetland Islands, just over 100km north of the Antarctic Peninsula. The centre of the volcano collapsed long ago and flooded, leaving a horseshoe of black ash slopes and glaciers wrapped around a natural harbour, Port Foster. It is one of the most visited landing sites in Antarctica and one of the strangest.
What you'll see
The entrance alone is memorable. Ships sail through Neptune's Bellows, a gap only a few hundred metres wide between steep cliffs, into the sheltered bay inside the crater.
Common landing sites include:
- Whalers Bay, where rusting boilers and tanks from a Norwegian whaling station stand on a black beach, alongside the remains of a British research base abandoned after eruptions in 1967 and 1969. A walk up to Neptune's Window, a gap in the crater rim, gives views out to sea.
- Telefon Bay, with walks over the lunar-like landscape of craters formed in the 1960s eruptions.
- Baily Head, on the outer coast, home to a huge chinstrap penguin colony, though landings here are often prevented by swell.
In some places the sea is warmed by geothermal heat, and steam can rise from the beach. Some expedition ships offer a "polar plunge" here, though the water just offshore is still bitterly cold.
Practical information
- How to visit: Deception Island is only reachable by expedition ship, usually on voyages from Ushuaia in Argentina across the Drake Passage. Many Antarctic Peninsula itineraries include it, but it isn't guaranteed.
- Season: Antarctic cruises run from about November to March. Penguin chicks hatch around December and January.
- Rules: landings follow strict guidelines set by the Antarctic Treaty and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), limiting how many people go ashore at once. Historic sites at Whalers Bay are protected; don't touch or remove anything.
- Costs: landings are part of your cruise price. Expedition fares vary hugely by ship, cabin and dates, so compare current deals.
Bring waterproof trousers and good layers. Zodiac landings are wet, and the wind in the caldera can be fierce.

Frequently asked questions
Is Deception Island still an active volcano?
Yes. It last erupted in 1970 and is monitored by scientists from research stations that operate on the island in summer.
Can you swim at Deception Island?
Some ships offer a brief, supervised polar plunge. The water is only slightly warmer at the shoreline and very cold just beyond it.
Will my cruise definitely stop at Deception Island?
No. Expedition routes depend on weather, ice and landing permits, so treat it as a highlight you may visit, not a certainty.
