The Musei Vaticani hold one of the greatest art collections in the world, built up by popes over five centuries. A visit ends in the Sistine Chapel, whose ceiling Michelangelo painted between 1508 and 1512. Although the museums are in Vatican City, an independent state, they are the centrepiece of most trips to Rome.

What you'll see

The museums cover several kilometres of galleries, so it pays to know your priorities:

  • The Pio-Clementino Museum, with classical sculpture including the Laocoön group and the Apollo Belvedere.
  • The Gallery of Maps, a 120m corridor of painted maps of Italy under a gilded ceiling.
  • The Raphael Rooms, including The School of Athens.
  • The Pinacoteca, the picture gallery, with works by Raphael, Leonardo and Caravaggio.
  • The Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo's ceiling and his Last Judgement on the altar wall. Photography is not allowed here.
  • The spiral staircase near the exit, designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932.

Practical information

  • Tickets: about €20-25 for an adult booked online in 2026, including the online booking fee. Buy only on the official Vatican Museums website and check current prices; many resellers charge far more.
  • Opening: Monday to Saturday. The museums are closed on most Sundays and on religious holidays, but open free on the last Sunday of each month, when queues are very long.
  • Dress code: shoulders and knees must be covered, or you may be turned away.
  • Getting there: Ottaviano or Cipro metro stations (line A) are about 10 minutes' walk from the entrance on Viale Vaticano.
  • Best time to go: the first entry of the day, or late afternoon. Tuesdays and Thursdays tend to be a little quieter than Mondays and Saturdays.

The museum route is one-way and long. Pace yourself so you aren't exhausted by the time you reach the Sistine Chapel.

St Peter's Basilica is next door and free to enter, though queues for security can be long. Pair your trip with the Colosseum on another day, and see our Italy guide for more.

Frequently asked questions

Is a guided tour worth it?

For first-timers, often yes. A guide helps you navigate the huge complex and explains the art. Early-entry tours cost more but are much calmer.

Can I go straight from the Sistine Chapel to St Peter's?

A shortcut is sometimes open to groups, but individual visitors should expect to leave through the museums' exit and walk round to St Peter's Square.

How long does it take to see the Vatican Museums?

Allow three to four hours for the highlights, including the Sistine Chapel.
