Stretching more than 2,300km along the Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to thousands of species of fish, turtles, rays and, in winter, migrating whales. For many people it is the reason to travel to Australia in the first place.

The reef has suffered from repeated mass coral bleaching events in recent years, so condition varies from site to site. Good operators visit healthier sections and are open about what you will see, and it remains an extraordinary place to snorkel or dive.

What you'll see

Most visitors go on a day trip to the outer reef, around 1-2 hours by fast boat. You can expect hard and soft corals, colourful reef fish, giant clams and often green turtles. Many trips include a pontoon with underwater observatories and semi-submersibles, ideal for non-swimmers and children. Divers can try an introductory dive with no experience. Scenic flights or helicopter rides show the scale of the reef patterns from above, especially over Heart Reef in the Whitsundays.

Tickets and tips

  • Choosing a base: Cairns has the most choice; Port Douglas, about an hour north, is closer to the outer Agincourt Reefs; Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands are ideal for sailing trips and Whitehaven Beach.
  • Costs: outer reef day trips cost roughly A$200-300 per adult (2026), usually including lunch and snorkel gear. A reef environmental management charge is added to most tickets.
  • Stinger season: dangerous box jellyfish and Irukandji are present roughly from November to May. Operators provide full-body stinger suits, which also protect against sunburn.
  • Book small groups: smaller boats mean more time in the water and less crowding.
  • Sun protection: use reef-safe sunscreen and cover up; the Queensland sun is strong.

Getting there

Fly to Cairns (CNS), which has direct domestic flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and some international routes from Asia. Reef boats leave from Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal, a short walk from the city's waterfront hotels. For the Whitsundays, fly to Proserpine (PPP) for Airlie Beach or directly to Hamilton Island (HTI). Liveaboard dive trips are available for those who want several days on the reef.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Great Barrier Reef still worth visiting?

Yes. Bleaching has damaged some areas, but much of the reef still has impressive coral and abundant marine life. Choose a reputable outer reef operator for the best experience.

Cairns or the Whitsundays?

Cairns is better for snorkelling and diving and combines easily with the Daintree Rainforest. The Whitsundays are better for sailing, beaches and island resorts.

When is the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef?

June to October offers drier weather, calmer seas and good visibility. The wet season, from roughly December to April, brings heavy rain and the risk of cyclones.
