Bouillon is a small town on a loop of the River Semois in the far south of Belgium, close to the French border. Above it rises the castle associated with Godfrey of Bouillon, a leader of the First Crusade, one of the oldest and most evocative fortresses in Belgium.
The surrounding valley is one of the most beautiful parts of the Ardennes, with wooded hills, meandering river bends and quiet villages, making Bouillon a fine base for walking, kayaking and slow touring. Bouillon is in the province of Luxembourg in the Ardennes; see our Belgium guide too.
Things to do in Bouillon
- Bouillon Castle – explore its towers, passages and dark vaulted rooms high above the river. Falconry displays are held in season.
- Archéoscope Godefroid de Bouillon – a visitor centre telling the story of Godfrey and the Crusades.
- Kayaking on the Semois – kayak hire is easy to arrange in summer, with routes of different lengths through the valley.
- Tombeau du Géant – a famous viewpoint near Botassart over a dramatic loop of the Semois.
- Walking – marked trails follow the river and climb through the forests to viewpoints.
- Orval Abbey – around half an hour's drive away, a Cistercian abbey with medieval ruins, known for its Trappist beer and cheese.
- The riverside town – stroll the quays and enjoy the views of the castle from the bridges.
Where to stay
- Town centre – hotels along the river with castle views.
- Semois villages – guesthouses and gîtes in places such as Frahan, Rochehaut and Corbion, perfect for peaceful stays.
- Campsites – several along the river, popular with families in summer.
Getting there
Bouillon has no railway station. By car, allow about three and a half to four hours from Calais, or roughly two hours from Brussels. By public transport, take Eurostar to Brussels-Midi, then a train to Libramont and a bus to Bouillon. The nearest airport for UK flights is often Luxembourg (LUX), about an hour and a quarter by car.
Best time to visit
May to September is ideal for kayaking and walking, though July and August are busiest. Autumn brings beautiful colours in the forests. Some attractions reduce hours in winter.
Combine Bouillon with Orval Abbey and a cross-border visit to Sedan in France, home to another huge medieval castle.
