Mount Etna dominates eastern Sicily. At around 3,300m, its height changes with each eruption, it is the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active anywhere, erupting regularly in spectacular but usually contained fashion. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, and its fertile slopes produce wine, pistachios and citrus fruit. It's one of the great natural sights of Italy.

What you'll see

Most visitors start at Rifugio Sapienza, at about 1,900m on the southern slope, where there are cafés, souvenir shops and car parks. A short walk away, the Silvestri Craters, formed in an 1892 eruption, are free to explore and give a good sense of the black volcanic landscape.

From Rifugio Sapienza, the Funivia dell'Etna cable car climbs to about 2,500m. From there, 4x4 buses with a guide continue to around 2,900m, close to the summit area, where you'll walk among recent lava flows, steaming fumaroles and craters. Going higher, to the summit craters themselves, is only allowed with an authorised volcanological or alpine guide, and depends on current activity.

On the north side, Piano Provenzana is a quieter base with its own 4x4 tours, and the Alcantara Gorge and wine estates on the lower slopes make good add-ons.

Visiting

  • Tickets: the Silvestri Craters are free. In 2026, expect the cable car to cost from about €50 return, and a combined cable car, 4x4 and guide ticket from about €80 or more. Check current prices and operating status before you go.
  • Tours: guided hikes and jeep tours run from Catania, Taormina and the mountain villages, often including transport, which saves an early drive.
  • What to bring: it can be 10-15 °C colder at altitude than on the coast, with strong wind, so bring warm layers, a windproof jacket, sunglasses and sturdy shoes.
  • Safety: access to the higher areas can be restricted at short notice during eruptions or bad weather.

Getting there

Rifugio Sapienza is about an hour's drive from Catania and around 1h30 from Taormina, via the town of Nicolosi. An AST bus usually runs once a day from Catania, leaving in the morning and returning in the afternoon. For most visitors, a hire car or organised tour is easiest.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to visit Mount Etna?

Yes, on official routes and with authorised guides. The authorities close areas when activity increases, so follow guides' instructions and current restrictions.

Can you walk to the top of Etna?

Only with an authorised guide, and only when conditions allow. Unguided visitors can walk around the lower craters near Rifugio Sapienza.

When is the best time to visit Etna?

From April to October, when the cable car and 4x4 tours run most reliably and the weather is better. In winter, the upper slopes are covered in snow and there is skiing.
