Milford Sound, or Piopiotahi in Māori, is the best-known fiord in Fiordland National Park, part of the Te Wāhipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Area. Carved by glaciers, its walls rise vertically from dark water, with Mitre Peak standing at 1,692m. It is the most popular day trip from Queenstown and a highlight of any trip to New Zealand.

What you'll see

A cruise takes you about 15km to the Tasman Sea and back, passing Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls and Lady Bowen Falls, where boats edge close enough for you to feel the spray. Look out for fur seals on the rocks, dolphins and, if you are lucky, Fiordland crested penguins. Fiordland is one of the wettest inhabited places on earth, and after heavy rain the cliffs stream with temporary waterfalls, which many people find even more spectacular than a clear day.

The drive in is part of the experience. The Milford Road from Te Anau passes the Eglinton Valley, the Mirror Lakes and the Homer Tunnel, with short walks along the way.

Tickets and tips

  • Cruises: standard cruises take about 1h45-2h and cost from about NZ$90-130 per adult (2026); longer nature cruises and overnight boats are available.
  • Packages: coach and cruise packages from Queenstown make a long day of 12-13 hours. Fly-cruise-fly options cut the travel time dramatically.
  • Kayaking: guided kayak trips offer a quieter way to experience the fiord.
  • Timing: midday cruises are busiest as coaches arrive from Queenstown. Early morning or late afternoon departures are calmer.
  • Weather: the road can close because of snow or avalanche risk in winter and spring, and flights are often cancelled in poor weather, so leave a buffer day in your itinerary.

Getting there

From Te Anau, the drive to Milford Sound is about 120km and takes around two hours without stops. From Queenstown it is roughly 290km, about four hours each way, so many people stay in Te Anau the night before. There is no fuel at Milford Sound, so fill up in Te Anau. Parking at the terminal is limited and charged. Scenic flights run from Queenstown and Te Anau to Milford Sound's small airstrip, taking about 40 minutes from Queenstown.

Frequently asked questions

Is Milford Sound worth visiting in the rain?

Yes. Rain creates hundreds of waterfalls down the cliffs. Only very heavy weather that closes the road or cancels cruises is a real problem.

Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound?

Milford Sound is easier to reach and more dramatic. Doubtful Sound, accessed from Manapouri, is bigger, quieter and more remote, but the trip is longer and more expensive.

Can I drive to Milford Sound myself?

Yes. The road is sealed but winding and mountainous. Carry snow chains in winter and allow plenty of time for photo stops.
